Makita MAC700 “Big Bore” 2HP Air Compressor Review

Value of the Year

For the home workshop, the 2HP Makita Big Bore MAC700 is the sneaky little must have devil of the year.

If you already have a shop compressor and you pick up one of these portable gems for field work, don’t be surprised if you wind up using it as your main compressor and only firing up the big unit when you need sustained CFM (like sanding or spraying).

If you’re still on the fence about a small compressor, this is the one to get.  And unless you do the big CFM jobs, you just might find yourself selling your old compressor in the not so distant future.

If don’t have a compressor yet, and you’re considering a do it all unit, this will do the trick if you really value portability for work site use.  If you think it’ll stay mostly at home, but sometimes travel, then the Makita MAC2400 2.5HP Compressor may be a better choice for you.

The only common complaint is that it’s heavy and bulky (due to having a real cast iron piston compressor) and it can be a pain to move around. Ironically, if you find you need increased portability, you may want to go to the larger and heavier Makita MAC 5200 3HP Compressor, as it comes with wheels and a dolly handle. The trade off is that it’s bigger, heavier, it’s a little louder, and it costs more. But it also has much more capacity as well, so you still get more than your money’s worth.
